Proof of the detection capability of smoke detectors
Why prove the detection capability of fire detectors?
A decisive factor for the rapid detection of fires is the specific arrangement of the smoke detectors. In very high rooms and server rooms with a high air exchange rate, smoke may be detected too late. The immediate response of correctly configured detectors is the only way to gain valuable time, which can save lives and prevent the destruction of valuable goods.
Your safety: VdS tests
Smoke detectors are designed in accordance with the VdS 2095 or DIN VDE 0833 Part 2 regulations, which specify maximum room heights and airflow velocities. For certain limit areas, these regulations require proof of the detection capability of fire detectors.
If your room geometries and ambient conditions are outside the guidelines - even then, verification by VdS is ideal for ensuring your functioning fire protection. VdS uses a specially developed smoke generator or a pyrolysis system for the hot-wire test to verify the detection capability.
The smoke generator
The generator specially developed by VdS produces smoke through precisely controlled smoldering of fire material. A burner generates the energy required for the process and the thermal energy to direct a precisely defined amount of smoke to the ceiling by means of a separate chimney.
Even under unfavorable conditions, the generator produces enough smoke for reliable on-site testing with very small quantities of burning material. There is no contamination of your rooms or furnishings.
We have placed particular emphasis on compactness and weight reduction for the smoke generator - so that you can also work in places that are difficult to access. The generator can even be transported by airplane.
The hot-wire test is suitable for verifying the detection capability of highly sensitive aspirating smoke detectors in sensitive areas. An insulated wire is heated by a high current flow and the insulation surrounding it is thermo-chemically converted.
Almost invisible smoke is produced, similar to an overheated electronic device. For prevention in IT areas, it is necessary to react to this type of smoke for targeted defense against a hardware failure in the production area.
Reproducible tests can be carried out with the system used by VdS. In contrast to the tests according to British Standards, the insulation of the test coils is pyrolytically decomposed under monitored and controlled temperatures.
Areas of use
In principle, you can benefit from optimum safety for all types of smoke detectors thanks to our verification procedures.
No measuring equipment or other devices that disrupt your operating processes are required.
You have the immediate certainty that your fire alarm system will provide reliable alarms even with the most complex project planning and can save human lives and valuable goods - confirmed by Europe's number one for fire protection.
By the way: We are also happy to test your fire alarm technology together with your fire extinguishing systems. You benefit from additional savings and minimized costs - with the usual high VdS quality. And we can also combine the insurance-related tests with proof of compliance with building regulations for you.
