Maintenance of operational readiness of water extinguishing systems, Leaflet Sprinkler, water spray and foam extinguishing systems have a high success rate in extinguishing fires, also in hazards with high fire loads. To maintain operational readiness of these extinguishing systems, regular inspections and repairs shall be carried out. This leaflet specifies the minimum measures to be taken and the parties responsible for carrying them out. Given the diversity of system designs, however, it is impossible to specify the full range of control and repair measures. The user shall carry out regular inspections (see 18.3 of Guidelines for sprinkler systems, VdS CEA 4001). The user shall appoint one responsible staff member (sprinkler warden) and one deputy to be in charge of servicing and controlling the exting-uishing system. They shall see to it that the operating and maintenance instructions of the installer and any legal regulations are met. After control and repair works the entire system shall be returned to the proper operational condition. On all works carried out for maintaining the operational readiness the user shall keep a log book to be kept on the premises (e.g. VdS 2212). Spark Detection, Spark Separation and Spark Extinguishing Systems, Planning and Installation Qualified fire protection measures, e.g. fire protection installations, reduce the risk of fire loss. There-fore, fire insurance contracts generally stipulate the installation of a system according to local condi-tions, e.g. as per Clause 3610. If the insurer responsible for technical risk assessment sets store by the fact that the installation resp. availability of a fire protection system in accordance with Clause 3610 is a risk-minimising factor in the technical assessment, then the system shall fulfil certain re-quirements; among other things, it shall be VdS-approved. Such approvals are granted by VdS Scha-denverhütung GmbH in Köln (Cologne). A VdS approval will be granted if the fire protection system is designed by a VdS-approved installer in accordance with the appropriate VdS guidelines, and in-stalled using VdS-approved components that are functionally compatible (see Annex C) in accordance with the generally recognised codes of practice. This applies analogously to modifications or exten-sions of existent installations. These aspects also apply to the Guidelines for spark detection, spark separation and spark extin-guishing systems - Planning and installation. They are in accordance with the current state of the art and specify minimum requirements. Order No.: VdS 2106en, Edition: 2003-05, Publisher: VdS, Pages: 40, Price: 53.39 € |

Foam Extinguishing Systems, Planning and Installation Qualified measures for fire protection e.g. in the form of fire protection systems are indicated for reducing the risk of damage caused by fires. Fire insurance contracts always provide for the installation of a specific system (tailored to the needs on site) e.g. according to Clause 3610. In cases where the insurer in the course of a technical risk appraisal attaches great importance to the installation and/or existence of a corresponding fire protection system according to Clause 3610 to be considered as a risk reducing factor in the technical rating, the system shall fulfil certain conditions: it shall be VdS approved amongst other things. Such approvals are granted by VdS Schadenverhütung GmbH in Cologne. A VdS-approval in turn presupposes planning of the fire protection system according to the corresponding VdS Guidelines by a VdS approved installer by use of VdS-approved components that are tuned for proper functional interaction, considering the generally applicable rules of the art. The same applies to alterations or extensions of existing systems. Also these Guidelines for Foam Extinguishing Systems (low expansion foam and medium expansion foam) - Planning and Installation - are to be considered under these aspects. Water Spray Systems, Planning and Installation The provisions of the insurance contract are to be observed where claims are brought forward for the approval of a fixed deluge extinguishing system (hereinafter referred to as water spray system) by the insurer in the framework of a risk assessment. The installation of a VdS approved water spray system, e.g. according to clause 3610, may be contractually agreed. The water spray system, in order to be eligible for VdS approval, shall have been planned by a VdS approved installer according to these Guidelines and shall consist of VdS approved components harmonised in terms of functional interaction and shall have been installed in compliance with the generally accepted rules of the art and shall have been accepted by VdS. Hence from the technical point of view, the water spray system in order to be approved by VdS shall be planned and installed according to these Guidelines. The same applies to alterations or extensions of existing systems. These Guidelines correspond to the present state of the art and provide for minimum requirements. These Guidelines do not only contain technical specifications for the water spray system as such but also requirements for the buildings, rooms or facilities to be protected. Efficient operation of an extinguishing system can be expected only if these requirements are met. The absence of express requirements in these Guidelines is no passport to defining other solutions without the prior consent of VdS. Legal regulations and duties imposed by the authorities - apart from these Guidelines - need also be observed for the installation of water spray systems. Local application protection for electric and electronic equipment, Planning and Installation The growing use of electric and electronic equipment in all industrial sectors requires a supplementation and hence improvement of the originally room oriented systems of fi re protection by specific protective measures in form of local application fi re detection and fi re extinguishing systems. Local application systems by way of early fire alarms and pin-pointed fi re extinction contribute to reducing losses caused by fires and business interruptions. And also the volumes of extinguishing agents can be reduced in the interest of man and environment. Initial fi res inside or in the immediate vicinity of electric and electronic equipment, e.g. on installations and connections within air guide products, spread through the equipment (chimney effect). Specific local application protection such as detection, cut-off and extinction provide a safety barrier at neuralgic points, however, cannot serve as substitute for room protection. Safes, ATM-Safes, Strongroom Walls and Strongroom Doors; Requirements, Classification and Test methods On base of these guidelines tests are performed the results of which lead to a classifica-tion of the resistance value of secure storage units against burglary. The classification also may be considered for the construction of security systems. For this purpose it is also to be considered that for real burglary attempts longer times can be anticipated as for testing depending on the skills of the burglar, the conditions on site and the availability of tools. Results and reproduceability of tests which are performed manually depend on the ex-perience of the test team. Automated tests are still in development, but may be consid-ered when revising these guidelines. Periodical Inspections of Transportable Pressure Equipment (Pressurised Containers) This Leaflet specifies, by reference to legal foundations, why transportable pressure equipment (pressurised containers) whose deadline for periodical inspections has expired (usually after 10 years), does not have to be decommissioned, drained and transported to an inspection and filling plant. For an explanation of the above statement it is necessary to look closely at the legal foundations, their scope and the definitions specified therein: [ ] Order No.: VdS 3159en, Edition: 2011-09, Publisher: VdS, Pages: 4, Price: 6.31 € |

Wind turbines, Fire protection guideline The present guideline refers to the planning and operation of wind turbines constructed as lattice mast or tower. The fire protection concept applies to individual wind turbines as well as to wind farms designed as onshore or offshore installations. Fire protection requirements on wind turbines refer to the overall system and take into account the system-specific main areas of risk at the rotor blades, in the nacelle (machine house), in the tower, or at the premises. Depending on the kind of risk, different fire protection measures might be required. Fire protection measures are specifically designed for the operation and for servicing and maintenance activities resulting from the operational process. All fire protection measures should be ready for operation by the time the operation starts at the latest. Fire protection measures mentioned in this guideline do not take into account the assembly period. This guideline basically applies to turbines that will be newly built. Existing turbines should be adjusted to the fire protection measures mentioned in this guideline as far as is feasible.
