VdS CEA 4001 revised: VdS Guidelines for the planning and installation of sprinkler systems updated

Regardless if a fire breaks out at night in a chemical factory when no one is around, or during the main shift in a production hall for essential goods: as soon as a fire is detected, sprinkler systems immediately and automatically initiate the discharge of water and alert the firefighters. Often a fire is nearly extinguished even before the fire brigade arrives. To ensure that this functions properly in an acutual emergency, the planning and installation of sprinkler systems should be based on the Guidelines VdS CEA (European Insurance and Reinsurance Federation) 4001EN, which can now be ordered.

Cologne, April 28, 2011. The decisive factor in firefighting is immediately response. Sprinkler systems - being automatic extinguishing installations - decisively contribute to the protection of life and property. The Guidelines VdS CEA 4001EN provide an international standard for sprinkler systems - now available in an updated version.

These new guidelines supersede the edition VdS CEA 4001EN: 2008-11 (03), and are applicable to installations for which orders are placed as of April 1, 2011. "The basis for this is CEA 4001EN issued by the European Insurance and Reinsurance Federation, which was then expanded by VdS making use of our more than one hundred years of expertise", explains Gerrit Wiedeloh, contact person for water extinguishing systems at Europe's largest safety certifier VdS. "The most important amendments are related for instance to subsurface piping along with requirements for additional piping systems such as press fitting systems. The chapters 'Installation Certificate' and 'Documentation' have been revised in their entirety."

In co-operation with national and international experts from industries applying these systems as well as from the scientific sector and public authorities, VdS continuously develops and optimises its sets of guidelines. "This guarantees optimum protection for our partners at all times", says Wiedeloh. "With a VdS-certified system, companies have taken into account both the protection of life and any additional insurance requirements."

This set of guidelines (starting at 99 €) can be ordered from verlag@vds.de.
